Rotating cubes
March 11, 2007
After a debate about “rotating cubes” at work I felt compelled to bring the plight of the origins of the cube to this blog… enjoy…
The rotating cube was infact invented by Che Wo Cun in 1789 after the Dutch had introduced the cube (a stationary version) to China – also at this time the cube was in a flat and “drawn” state – which is where the word “drawn” originates… the only other know person know to ’spin’ a cube in a non 3D environment was Karsten Schmidt at Moving Brands in 2006. Obviously, the common dice (or die) was in existence much before 1789 with reports of it existing as far back as 1780 – but these were not thought of as cubes and were more likely referred to as ‘devil droppings’ (hence the origins of the word ‘die’) or ‘kruds’ which is where the slang word of “crud” comes from when referring to mud or shit.
